Using ChatGPT with no account, as of September 2026

You can type into ChatGPT without an account, in the countries where OpenAI offers it. You get 1 conversation at a time, it lives only in the current browser session, and starting a new chat makes the previous one unreachable. The account adds saved history, export, sharing and custom instructions.

People search for "chatgpt without login" for two reasons: to try it before handing over an email, or to use it without leaving a record. The logged-out version serves the first reason well. For the second, it helps less than it seems, and the details below are taken from OpenAI's own help centre in September 2026.

On this page
  1. It works, but 1 conversation at a time
  2. Nothing is saved for you
  3. Not saved for you is not the same as not kept
  4. Where the sign-in screen comes first
  5. What the account adds
  6. Questions before you start

It works, but 1 conversation at a time

On chatgpt.com you can type a question into the box and get an answer with no sign-up. While you are logged out, you can have only 1 conversation at a time. If you select New chat, the current conversation is no longer reachable. The conversation stays available only for the current session in the same browser, so closing the tab or switching devices ends it.

Nothing is saved for you

A logged-out chat does not go into a history you can open later. OpenAI lets you keep a conversation only by logging in or creating an account, and even then only the latest conversation moves into the new account; earlier ones cannot be saved. If you want to keep an answer, copy it out before you leave the page.

Not saved for you is not the same as not kept

By default, OpenAI uses logged-out chats to train its models. You can turn this off with the setting Improve the model for everyone, which you reach through the question-mark icon in the bottom-right corner of the page. That choice is stored in your browser, so it resets when you clear cookies, change browser or change device. Logged out means no account, not no record.

Where the sign-in screen comes first

OpenAI offers logged-out use only in supported countries, and in September 2026 it is still not available in Europe, except in the UK. In those countries ChatGPT asks you to log in or sign up before you can send the first message. The screen is about where you connect from, not about anything you typed.

What the account adds

An account lets you save and search your chat history, export your data, share a chat through a link, and set custom instructions that apply to every conversation. Each of those features needs a record that belongs to one person, which is exactly what the account is. If you need none of them, the logged-out version gives you the same answers with less attached.

Questions before you start

Can I get a logged-out ChatGPT conversation back after I close the tab?

No. A logged-out conversation stays available only for the current session in the same browser. Once the session ends, there is no history to return to.

Is logged-out ChatGPT anonymous?

It is not tied to an account, but your messages still reach OpenAI, and by default they can be used for training until you switch that setting off in the browser you use.

Why can't I send a message without signing in?

Most likely you are connecting from a country where OpenAI does not offer logged-out use yet. In September 2026 that includes most of Europe, but not the UK.

Open a chat that needs no account for the first message or for the hundredth.
